Missions at Gethsemane

Treat Baskets for Essential Workers

Our neighborhood front-line heroes have been “adopted” by Gethsemane!  We want to show them how much they are appreciated. Each month we are taking a treat basket to the faculty and staff at Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, Fire Station 13, Precinct 1 Constable's Office, Wainwright Elementary, and the teachers at our Preschool.

How you can help with this project:

  • Write a thank you note for our community heroes. Label the envelope "Health Heroes," "Firefighters," "Constables," “Teachers,” or "GLC Preschool" so we’ll know which basket to put it in.

  • Shop for items for the baskets. These folks work very hard and often have little time to take a break and eat. Microwavable, individual-sized foods and healthy snacks (as well as some fun snacks like candy bars and chips) would be great. You can also donate personal items to brighten their day, like hand lotion, post-it notes, and fun desk items. You can drop these donations off at church.

  • Help assemble and deliver the baskets. We will meet once a month to put together the treat baskets. Dates and times will be announced by our Missions Director, Lisa Sitz.

  • Make a donation. If shopping isn’t your thing, you can send a check to the church office (Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 4040 Watonga Blvd., Houston, TX 77092). Just be sure you mark it as a donation specifically for Missions for the “Basket Project.”

Orphan Grain Train

We partner with the Houston branch of Orphan Grain Train. Orphan Grain Train is a Christian volunteer network that shares personal and material resources with needy people in America and around the world. Volunteers gather donations of clothing, medical supplies, food, and other aid to meet real needs. The Orphan Grain Train movement is a loving response to Jesus Christ’s example as a servant and His love for us.

School Kits and Quilts for Orphan Grain Train

Every year members at Gethsemane create school kits and quilts that are donated to Orphan Grain Train. We pray that God blesses each item and protects these products that are sent worldwide to help people. We also pray that the recipients are blessed by these gifts.

Join the Brunch Bunch!

The Brunch Bunch is a group at Gethsemane that has started meeting for brunch to discuss ideas for outreach and mission opportunities. The group plans to meet monthly on a weekday morning and will go to a restaurant after assembling the monthly treat baskets for essential workers. We would love for you to join us!

Stay tuned to our announcements for upcoming dates and locations. If you would like to join the Brunch Bunch, please contact Lisa Sitz at lisa.sitz@gmail.com or 713-410-5427.
